New Aspen Partnership Buys Mammoth Resorts, Challenges Vail Resorts’ Dominance In Season Pass Sales
Just two days after the announcement that Aspen Skiing Co.-KSL Capital Partners has acquired Steamboat and Winter Park ski areas, they have announced that the new partnership, has also purchased the Eastern Sierra’s Mammoth Mountain, June Mountain, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain. This gives the partnership more than 6,000 acres of ski terrain spread across four ski resorts in Southern California. A price for this newest purchase has not yet been announced. It’s been no secret that ski industry giant, Vail Resorts, has been vying for Mammoth Mountain as a sure way to boost the sales of the ever popular Epic Pass. With easy access for California’s 23 million residents it’s almost a sure bet that the new, so far unnamed, partnership between KSL Capital Partners and Aspen Skiing Co. will be offering a season pass to include not only the four newly acquired California resorts but also Aspen Snowmass, Squaw Alpine, Steamboat, Winter Park, Quebec’s Mont Tremblant, Vermont’s Stratton, Ontario’s Blue Mountain and West Virginia’s Snowshoe ski areas. We have been seeing less reliance on Real Estate sales these days with season pass sales being the driving force for resort’s revenue. Vail Resorts has shown this with the dominance of the Epic Pass. It will be interesting to see how the rivalry between Vail and the new partnership of Aspen Skiing Co.-KSL Capital Partners plays out over the years to come and how it will shape the ever growing ski industry.
