During the month of January, over eleven feet of snow fell in Crested Butte. Our iconic brightly colored mining cabins downtown were buried - many of them had snow piled up nearly to the roof. Shoveled walkways resembled tunnels all over town and snow removal professionals are still hard at work cleaning it all up. Nearly ALL of the extreme terrain is open at Crested Butte Mountain Resort, some of which never opened at all last year! January brought powder day after powder day with new snow nearly every day of the month. The snow was coming down so fast at one point that Crested Butte Mountain Resort closed for the afternoon to keep everyone safe. History was made as the Crested Butte school AND Western University closed for snow days too. With some of the inconvenience of having record volumes of sow also comes some truly incredible skiing!! While the massive snow totals were making headlines all over, there were several other events going on in January. World Snowboard Day was celebrated at Crested Butte Mountain Resort with a banked slalom race and the 2nd Annual Fat Bike Worlds events (and after parties) took place at several venues around town. A local ski hero Aaron Blunck also made headlines as he took gold in the X-Games (held in Aspen, CO). Watch his gold medal winning run here.
The February calendar is packed with events including the Alley Loop, the Prater Cup, music performances, art classes and Mardi Gras!
