Adaptive Sports Crested Butte Starts Construction
Things are moving and shaking at the Crested Butte Mountain Resort base area as the Adaptive Sports Center begins construction on the Kelsey Wright building. Construction crews brought down the old Outpost Building on Wednesday, April 25th to make way for the new Adaptive Sports Center home which is slated to open in 2019.
Currently located in the Treasury Building, the Adaptive Sports Center has been “bursting at the seams.” Founded in 1987, Adaptive gave 33 lessons during their first winter season. Today the Adaptive Sports Center provides over 6,000 lessons a year to more than 700 physically challenged individuals and operates year round. Their team has grown to 15 board members, 14 full-time staff members, more than 25 professional instructors and hundreds of volunteers. One of the biggest challenges they have faced in their current location is the limited options available to house participants. There are very few accessible lodging options in our area which has forced Adaptive to cap their enrollment and even turn people away.
Their solution? The Adaptive Sports Center purchased the Outpost Building located at the Crested Butte Mountain Resort base area and has raised $12.4 million, ninety percent of the funds needed to build their new home, the Kelsey Wright Building. The building is designed with an accessible plan and will better meet the needs of their participants.
