A Valley in Motion: What the numbers (and news) are saying

Despite minimal powder days this winter, the valley is alive! March brings one of the most celebrated events in Crested Butte: the Al Johnson Memorial Telemark Race on March 29, a beloved tradition that draws costumed skiers down the mountain in honor of the original mail carrier who skied these passes in the 1880s. Also that weekend, the Grand Traverse Ski Race kicks off — a 40-mile overnight crossing from Crested Butte to Aspen that represents mountain endurance at its finest. The Banff Mountain Film Festival rolls into the Center for the Arts on March 20–21, and the arts scene stays in full swing throughout the month with live music as well as the Disco Inferno celebration on the 27th.

Before we know it, spring will descend upon the Gunnison Valley (it certainly feels like it’s already begun), which in real estate, means more listings, more demand, but also more competition. Whether you are exploring your first purchase in the valley or adding to a portfolio you’ve been building for years, the conditions right now reward preparation and decisive action in equal measure.

In recent local news, The Crested Butte Land Trust secured $3.8 million in funding to close on 90 acres of Slate River wetlands near Gothic Road — the last large unprotected piece of the upper Slate River Valley. This is a defining signal that the open space that makes Crested Butte extraordinary is being actively protected, but also that the finite supply of buildable land in this valley grows more finite with each passing season.

For those paying attention, the story unfolding across Gunnison Valley is one of quiet opportunity wrapped in long-term confidence. Whether you’re considering buying, selling, or simply enjoy staying informed, we’re here to help you navigate the Crested Butte market and make the most of mountain life in this beautiful community.
