May has arrived in Crested Butte – a season of in-betweens. We relish this time of year when the Gunnison Valley is quiet and carries the unhurried energy of spring.
 
This spring, the valley is navigating a drier-than-usual chapter. Water year 2026 has trended well below average, with snowpack falling to historic lows and peak river runoff arriving nearly two months ahead of schedule. Local water managers are keeping a close eye on conditions and are hopeful that a strong monsoon season will bring meaningful relief. It’s a timely reminder of how precious this landscape is — and why the stewardship of our lands and waterways matters so deeply to those of us who love this place.
 
May in CB has several community events worth noting. The Mountain Words Literary Festival returns May 21 through 24, bringing a multi-day celebration of literature and writing to the Crested Butte Center for the Arts, with readings, workshops, panel discussions, live theater, and kids’ events. And mark your calendars — the Crested Butte Farmers Market opens for the season on Sunday, May 31st, running every Sunday on Elk Avenue through October 11th.
 
In real estate, there is a lot to be optimistic about as we enter the spring season. This time of year is historically the moment the Crested Butte real estate market comes alive.
