Tourism Association Says Winter Grew, While Summer Season Cannot
As we head into Memorial Day Weekend, many of us are spending it getting ready for another busy summer. Many of the town’s shops and restaurants re-open this weekend as we welcome out of town guests back to the Gunnison Valley. The Tourism Association Says Winter Grew, While Summer Season Cannot. During a Tuesday report to the Gunnison Board of County Commissioners, John Norton – director of the Gunnison-Crested Butte Tourism Association (TA) – talked about the growth within the Gunnison Valley and how we rank among similar resort communities. Our hotels are filling up as are the condos and B&Bs. And not just in the north end of the Valley, Gunnison is seeing consistent occupancy growth as well. This winter, Gunnison saw 1/3 of the people who passed through the Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport staying in Gunnison hotels, condos and B&Bs. The push to bring people to the Gunnison Valley in the winter months is working. Summer however doesn’t need the same marketing efforts. We have no problem attracting visitors to the Gunnison Valley in the summer months. In fact, the TA will not be actively marketing the valley for July and the first two weeks of August when the towns, rivers and trails are packed with visitors. “Summer is off to a fast start. We can’t maintain the numbers we’re looking at [from DestiMetrics],” Norton said.
