There’s no month quite like July here — and no better place to spend the Fourth. In Crested Butte, the holiday unfolds the way it has for generations: the parade rolling down Elk Avenue at 11 a.m., and a block party carrying the celebration into the afternoon. Mt. Crested Butte’s Independence Day Celebration returns to the Red Lady Stage, with live music, kids’ activities, and a light show at dusk. Cattlemen’s Days kicks off with the 4-H Horse Show today and the Ranch Rodeo on July 4th, while hot air balloons rise at sunrise from Jorgensen Park all weekend, with music, food, and family festivities filling the park on the Fourth. As always, event details can shift with conditions, so check with organizers for the latest before you go.
 
That caveat is important this year. As many of you know, wildfires are active across Colorado and the broader region, and our thoughts are with the communities, firefighters, and families affected. The Gunnison Valley remains safe and welcoming — but this summer is a reminder that the landscape we love asks something of us in return. Honoring fire restrictions and staying informed aren’t inconveniences; they’re how we care for the meadows, forests, and rivers that make this valley what it is. Stewardship is part of living here, and it’s how we ensure these mountains are here to enjoy — for our neighbors, our visitors, and the generations who come after us.
 
Real estate trends throughout June told a confident story. Residential prices across the valley didn’t just hold — they strengthened, particularly at the top of the market, where the Upper Gunnison Valley saw significant gains in median price and price per square foot rose across both regions. Homes are taking a little longer to sell, but when the right property meets the right buyer, values are being met. As we head into peak summer, we expect more of the same: durable demand in the residential market, and continued momentum in land as buyers move to secure their place in the valley before inventory tightens further.
